How to Adjust Metal and Plastic Frames with Seek Optics
At Seek Optics, we know both metal and plastic frames can be adjusted to achieve the perfect fit. Before starting, it’s important to have a clear idea of the adjustment you want to make.
General Frame Adjustments
If your sunglasses feel too loose, begin by tightening the hinges for a firmer fit. If further adjustments are needed, try gently bending the arms or the nose bridge inward. This will help bring the arms closer together, ensuring a snug fit on your head.
Start by tracing the shape of your frames on a piece of paper to track changes. Adjustments should be made gradually, moving the arms no more than 1cm at a time. After each adjustment, compare your frames to the traced shape to ensure accuracy.
Hinge Tightening
Over time, sunglass hinges can loosen, causing an improper fit. Tight hinges reduce the chances of your sunglasses slipping or falling.
- Check the screws to identify whether they require a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver.
- Grip the frames firmly and tighten the screws carefully, turning them only slightly (about 5 degrees at a time).
- Test the fit by gently shaking the sunglasses. The arms should remain stationary but still open and close smoothly.
- Once adjusted, apply a small dab of clear nail polish to the screw heads to prevent them from loosening in the future.
Plastic Frame Adjustments
Plastic frames can be adjusted with care to avoid damage. We recommend soaking the frames in very hot tap water for 30 seconds before making adjustments.
- Trace the shape of your frames to track progress.
- Gently bend the arms inward, moving them no more than 1cm at a time. Hold the bend for about 10 seconds before releasing.
- Compare the frames to the traced outline after each adjustment to ensure proper alignment.
- Make small, incremental adjustments to avoid breaking the frames.
Metal Frame Adjustments
Metal frames are typically more flexible and can be adjusted by hand. For firmer frames, needle-nose pliers or standard pliers can be used.
- Always trace the frame shape to monitor changes.
- If using pliers, cover the clamps with a soft cloth to prevent scratches.
- Bend the arms or nose bridge gently, making small adjustments until the desired fit is achieved.
